What is a butterfly valve?

2023-08-15

A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn device that provides switching and adjustment services within a piping system. It is lightweight, portable, cost-effective, and comes in different orifice sizes. The valve’s name derives from the design of its disc or plate, which resembles a butterfly. This “butterfly” is a disc that rotates around a central axis and can move in parallel to allow flow, or vertically to stop flow.

Butterfly valves have three main components: valve body, disc, stem and actuator. The butterfly valve body is the main component that houses the internal parts and connects to the piping. The disc is located in the center of the body and rotates to control the flow of the fluid medium. When the disc is turned in a parallel direction, the medium passes smoothly, while when it is turned vertically, the flow of fluid is blocked. The stem acts as a bridge between the disc and the actuator. It attaches the disc to the actuator and ensures that the disc is in the correct position for flow control. The actuator can adjust the rotation of the disc manually (lever or gear) or automatically (pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric).

Butterfly valves play a vital role in many industries and applications, such as in agriculture and irrigation, by efficiently distributing water in farmland while helping to conserve water. They also help dispose of waste and products from chemical plants, sewer systems, food processing plants, and the petroleum industry. Another application of these valves is in pharmaceutical production, where the precise movement of the drug is critical.
